Alice Allison Dunnigan was the first Black woman to receive White House press credentials, serving as Washington bureau chief for the Associated Negro Press from 1947 to 1961.1

The collection consists of Dunnigan’s papers from 1958-1981 including correspondence, financial records, photographs, her writings (including reports and speeches), newspaper articles, correspondence relating to her appointment to the Committee on Equal Employment Opportunity, her efforts to publish a book on Black Kentuckians, and a typescript of the book published as The Fascinating Story of Black Kentuckians: Their Heritage and Tradition.

This collection covers the period of 1947-1977 and consists of personal papers (e.g. curriculum vitae, employment applications, photographs, calendars, press passes), family papers, more than 25 years of personal and professional correspondence,   writings by and about Dunnigan, organizational affiliation, programs and invitations, and scrapbooks.
