Brief

‍     Known as both the "Queen of Happiness" and "Harlem's Little Black Bird," Mills (1896-1927) was a singer, dancer, and comedian. She began her professional career at age six, performing in vaudeville circuits with her sisters.

1.  Florence Mills Papers, Helen Armstead-Johnson Theatre Collection, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, The New York Public Library

Collection contains personal and professional papers including invitations, calling cards, receipts, a ticket to a performance of Plantation Revue, letters of support from friends and fans, clippings, programs, souvenirs, and professional contracts.

2.   Florence Mills, images.  Photographs of Prominent African Americans. James Weldon Johnson Collection in the Yale Collection of American Literature, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. Call Number JWJ MSS 76.
