This collection contains correspondence, educational and financial papers, résumés documenting Bennett's teaching and literary career, photographs, diaries, class notes and printed materials from the School for Democracy (predecessor to the Jefferson School of Social Science), typescripts of poems and book reviews, newspaper and magazine research files, and newspaper clippings, letters, and memorabilia chronicling her youth and published work.

This collection contains correspondence, writings, and personal papers documenting Gwendolyn Bennett's career as a writer and educator, as well as her personal life. The collection includes correspondence with Langston Hughes, including four poems inscribed to Bennett, correspondence with her father, Joshua Bennett, her mother, Mayme Abernathy Pizarro, and her stepmother, Marechal Neil Bennett, mock-ups for her Opportunity column, "The Ebony Flute," drafts of articles and a short story, and personal papers, including bills, receipts, a book of Psalms, and notes.
