June 14, 1953

Martha White refuses to give up her seat on a Baton Rouge, Louisiana city bus. June 19, 1953, an official bus boycott begins, organized by Reverend T.J. Jemison and Raymond Scott. They, along with the United Defense League start a “Free Ride System” to transport Black citizens around the city.

The Sit-Ins

During the 50s and 60s many young people and nonviolent groups organized to sit-ins at businesses that were open to the public but denied service to Black patrons.
